Robert Downey, Sr. directed the movie which was written by Tom Patchett and Jay Tarses (who wrote for the Carol Burnett show and the Bob Newhart show.) Up the Academy was shot in Los Angeles and in Salina, Kansas. The movie was released on June 6, 1980.
